Abstract

This article is about disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants – activities that have recently become part of the United Nations peace operations and that are progressively receiving more attention within the Organization. The DDR is essential for the stabilization of the region and to avoid the re-incidence of the conflict. Nevertheless, it is a very complex activity (with many institutions involved) and it is difficult to coordinate and to execute. Therefore, it can be concluded that this subject demands greater efforts from the United Nations in order to overcome the problems and difficulties DDR has been facing.
